Superficial and deep learning

Marco Teórico

Some authors, such as Craik and Lockhart (1972), have claimed that memory’s efficiency is strongly influenced by the depth of information processing during its codification. These authors assume that there is a continuum among the levels of data processing in the analysis of an item. The most superficial levels codify information’s physical and sensory characteristics, whilst the deepest levels extract the most abstract semantic properties from the information at issue. Those items that are processed in a deeper level will last longer through time. The following task allows to appreciate the effect of the type of the initial level of information processing in the capacity subsequent recall.
