Language

Language is one of the fundamental capacities of human beings. “[It] is thought of as the uniquely human part of a broader system of communication that shares features with other animal communication systems” (Duncan, 1999; p. 438). It consists on the combination of written or oral symbols according to certain rules. It allows communicating about the most diverse contents: ideas regarding tangible and intangible issues; feelings; information about objects, people and events (both present and absent); and so on. Language encompasses a wide and diverse set of processes, which have been studied by different disciplines (Psychology, Linguistics, Sociology, etc.). Moreover, these various processes have been addressed from markedly dissimilar approaches (from those that conceive language as the disembodied capacity to manipulate symbols, to those that emphasize the social functions of language by studying communicative acts as a whole -Duncan, 1999-). In this section, you will be able to explore some interesting phenomena related to language.
